The second bedroom was quite large and lent itself to be divided to enable the re-positioning of the family bathroom from the ground floor to the first floor; a four-piece suite was professionally installed, providing that large walk-in shower for the children and a relaxing bath for the grownups.

Within the loft space, we created a large master bedroom, including a spacious en-suite; a combination of French doors/roof windows created that wow factor from a dusty, empty roof.

Lighting was an essential factor from natural sunlight and artificial, ensuring that all key areas were illuminated; this included the latest intelligent lighting controls that allow pre-programmed settings.

The complete project was carried out under permitted development which meant that we did not have to apply for planning permission; the ground floor extension would have sailed through the loft conversion however would have been somewhat troublesome with Mid Sussex district council; we wanted to maximise the loft space and by doing so, meant that the dormer would have to be full width.

The council have a design guide. (Mid Sussex Design Guide Supplementary Planning) the document sets out their vision. Unfortunately, their vision is not always the homeowner’s.

So when extending, keep it under the permitted development or prior approval umbrella.
