Side elevation extension to a semi-detached Victorian house

The Project

This house extension consists of a side elevation extension to a semi-detached Victorian house in Horsham, West Sussex.

The client wanted to achieve a larger kitchen and breakfast room, including a snug to relax and that all-important downstairs WC.

Because of the depth of the extension, some 7 meters, planning permission was required; Horsham council has some planning.

Like many typical semi-detached Victorian houses, the gardens are quite large compared to today’s standards; the internal rooms, however, tend to be on the small side but nice and cozy though.

One must-have was to encourage natural light to flow, and the client feared that the inner rooms would become dark by extending outwards to the side and rear elevations.

To overcome this, we incorporated glass folding doors to the rear elevation and a glass apex above. To the side elevation, we sited a full-height picture window that had a relationship with the doors.

We installed three aluminium-powered coated roof lights to the roof, laid upon exposed timber beams, and high-level vaulted ceilings achieved the feeling of space.

Karndean LVT plank flooring was laid throughout the ground floor in the herringbone style. A two-tone shaker-style kitchen matches perfectly with the theme, high-level floor-to-ceiling units supply plenty of storage, and the large island provides a practical and social hub.
